Northern Colorado Athletics Statement on Football Staff

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Below is Northern Colorado Athletic’s Statement regarding an incident involving an assistant football coach and fan at last week’s game.

The University of Northern Colorado Athletics, in cooperation with Montana State University Athletics and the Big Sky Conference, reviewed an incident involving an assistant football coach tossing an object into the stands that inadvertently struck a spectator at the Bears-Bobcats football game. After reviewing statements and video of the incident, it was determined that Offensive Coordinator Max McCaffrey’s tossing of a piece of a broken clipboard to a fan who requested the souvenir showed a lack of judgment but no malicious intent.

“While Coach Max McCaffrey’s tossing of a souvenir into the stands showed poor judgment, it was clear there was no intent to harm nor was the action fueled by anger. Max is embarrassed by the incident and is working privately to apologize to the fan hit by the errant toss,“ said Director of Athletics Darren Dunn. “After visiting with Max and the entire football staff, I am confident we will have no further engagement with fans of our opponents.”

UNC has officially reprimanded Coach Max McCaffrey for the incident.
