McBride Adds to Preseason Resume with Lombardi Award Watch List

Tight end Trey McBride continues to add to his preseason accolades.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State All-American tight end Trey McBride added another accolade to his lengthy preseason resume when he was named to the Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List.

McBride has already previously earned preseason All-Mountain West First Team honors from Pro Football Focus (PFF) as well as a spot on the John Mackey Award Watch List given to the nation’s top tight end. It’s the first time in McBride’s career he has appeared on the watch list for the Lombardi Award.

The Lombardi Award goes annually to the college football offensive or defensive lineman, who in addition to outstanding performance and ability, best exemplifies the character of discipline of NFL Hall of Fame head coach Vince Lombardi.

McBride is considered one of the nation’s top tight ends and possesses an all-around game with his pass catching and blocking ability. He was one of only nine tight ends to make the list and just two from outside a Power 5 conference.

In 2020, McBride graded out high for PFF as both a blocker and a receiver, giving him a 90.8 receiving grade last season after leading the team with 22 receptions for 330 yards and four touchdowns; he also became the first tight end in program history to lead the team in scoring. He was tied for the 6th-best mark nationally in receiving grade by a tight end and was 14 spots higher than the next closest Mountain West tight end, Air Force’s Kyle Patterson.

Only two other Mountain West tight ends appeared in the Top 50.

For his career, McBride has steadily climbed the charts for Colorado State tight ends and enters the 2021 campaign one touchdown away from tying Joel Dreessen for the second-most touchdown receptions in a career. He also has the second-best yards per catch average by a tight end in Ram history.
