STRIKE TWO: No way the Denver Broncos should have kept Gary Kubiak as their “new” offensive coordinator. Kubs offense is a dinosaur, and Denver isn’t going to catch up to Kansas City or the Chargers going back to the way they used to play offense – dink and dunk with rag armed Trevor Siemian…or anyone like him.
Instead, Denver went with up and comer Rich Scangarello as their play caller, and it will be exciting to see what he can do with the young Denver skill guys that surround QB Case Keenum. First up though, Denver better beef up the O line.
Kubiak landed on his feet, as an “Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Advisor” in Minnesota. Curious move for a guy who had to retire from being a head coach just two years ago for health reasons. Once again, he’s bringing his boys along – former Broncos assistant Rick Dennison and Brian Pariani, along with son Klint as a QB coach. Kubs is getting the band back together.
Sort of like reuniting Great White when the world has moved on to Greta Van Fleet.
So why we watch Scangarello and hope for the latest version of Sean McVay and/or Kyle Shanahan, we will keep one eye on Kubs and hope he does well in the Great White North. He’s still one of ours, right?
So…should John Elway have tried to keep his buddy around to continue his front office help, maybe?
Maybe it’s just a coincidence that Denver had its best draft since Elway took over in 2012 last April with Kubs being part of the evaluation and decision making process. Elway’s track record in the draft is spotty at best, but last year’s crop of rookies was special. Hmm.
I think a lot of Broncos fans – including this one – would have welcomed a front office move that left Elway as the Executive VP and made Kubiak the General Manager. It’s too late for now, but what if Denver has another crappy draft this spring? Could Elway ever call his old buddy and offer him a nice, full time front office gig? Stay tuned.
It’s 0-2. Strike Three comes on Friday…What about legalized sports gambling coming to Colorado?
