UNC men’s basketball defeated Sacramento State 90-83 Wednesday Morning

BOISE, Idaho – Survive and advance. That the name of the game come March and that’s what Northern Colorado men’s basketball did Wednesday morning. The No. 8 seed Bears took down No. 9 seed Sacramento State 90-83 to advance to tomorrow’s quarterfinal matchup with top seed Southern Utah.

 

The quartet of Bodie Hume, Matt Johnson II, Kur Jockuch and Daylen Kountz scored 73 of the team’s 90 points. Hume led the way with a career-high 30.

 

He was lights out from the field shooting 52.6% from the field including 7-of-10 from behind the arc.

 

A big part of Hume’s success was the vision of Johnson II who dropped a career-best eight assists in the game to go with his 15 points. Five of the eight assists came on Hume made baskets.

 

Both teams played well offensively shooting over 55% each. UNC shot 56.7% and Sacramento State was 55.7% from the field.

 

Down by three at the half, Northern Colorado opened the half on an 8-0 run and never trailed after that.

 

Sacramento State got within one possession multiple times, but it was a Hume block with 36 seconds left that sealed the win for UNC.

 

Stat of the Game

Northern Colorado used the three-point line to their advantage on Wednesday. The Bears made 13 three-pointers shooting 65.0% from behind the arc.

 

Game Notes
– Bodie Hume stuffed the stat sheet. To go with his 30 points he had eight rebounds, three blocks, and two steals.

– Kur Jockuch recorded his fifth straight double-double scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

– Daylen Kountz had a career-high eight rebounds to go with his 14 points and three assists.

– Northern Colorado outrebounded Sacramento State 34 to 19.

– The win was UNC’s first this season when trailing at the half.

– Thursday’s match up with Southern Utah is the third straight season the two teams have been set to face each other in the Big Sky Tournament.

 

What’s Ahead
It’s on to the quarterfinals for UNC as they face the regular season champion and top seed Southern Utah at 11 am on Thursday, March 11.
