CSU MBB Recap: Rams Control Early, Handle San Jose State 90-57
CSU has four in double figures to propel the program to the best league start in school history
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Colorado State jumped out early and built the lead throughout in easily handling San Jose State 90-57 Thursday night in Phoenix. With the win, the Rams improved to 9-2 and 6-1 in Mountain West play, while the Spartans fell to .
CSU scored the first five points of the game and just kept steadily building the first half lead behind solid shooting and strong overall defense. The Rams build the lead to as many as 26 in the first half and eventually went into the break leading 46-26. SJSU did get the lead down to 16 seven minutes into the second half, however CSU had an answer every time the rest of the half, including using a 17-2 run to lead by as many as 34 with under four minutes to play.
Colorado State finished the game at 54.7 percent (35-of-64) from the floor, including a stellar 63.0 percent (17-of-27) in the second half. San Jose State was limited to just 34.4 percent (22-of-64) and 32.0 percent (8-of-25) from the three-point line. The Rams won the battle of the boards 32-21.
Junior guard Kendle Moore led the Rams with 18 points, including four three-pointers, while junior David Roddy finished with 17 points and a game and team season-high 14 rebounds. Sophomore guard Isaiah Stevens finished with 14 points, while sophomore guard John Tonje came off the bench with 13. Richard Washington was the only Spartan in double figures with 35.
STAT OF THE GAME
• CSU pushed the tempo effectively, outscoring SJSU 24-3 on the fast break.
NOTES
• This is a unique series in that one team has won all the meetings so far, as CSU has won all 21 meetings. All but one have occurred since 1997, with 15 of them in conference play.
• CSU leader Niko Medved has a 4-0 record against San Jose State as a head coach.
• The Rams’ 6-1 conference record is the program’s best start in league play in the modern era (WAC and MW).
• The 46 points were the most in the first half for the Rams and the second largest halftime lead (20) of the season.
• Roddy’s double-double was his fifth of the season and seventh of his career (Rams are 7-0 when he has one). That moves him to a tie for 29th in CSU history.
• Moore’s 18 points were a season high.
• Tonje has scored in double figures in four of the last five games.
